Sample Letter to Parents to Send with TV Time Chart
(English)

Dear Parents,

Many children spend more time watching television than they do playing with friends, reading books, or going to school. To help you and your child assess his/her television viewing, we have provided you with the enclosed TV Time Chart.

Put the chart in a conspicuous place—next to the television, on the refrigerator, or on the family bulletin board. During the week, help your child fill in a box for each hour of television/video he or she watches, or for each hour of playing video games. After the chart is completed, add the total number of hours of television your child has watched.

Most child-development experts recommend that children watch two or fewer hours of TV per day. Did your child watch more? If your answer is "yes," look at the chart to see when your child watches the most television. Is it before or after school? At dinner-time or late at night? Is there a clear pattern of TV viewing? Discuss the chart with your child and see where you can make changes.

As a busy parent, it is difficult to consistently regulate television viewing. By looking at the chart and discussing television habits, you and your child can make changes together so television is a positive rather than a negative influence in your home.

Sincerely,
